What is CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a compound found in cannabis plants such as hemp or marijuana. Unlike the other major compound found in cannabis plants—THC—CBD does not produce any psychoactive side effects (the “high” feeling associated with marijuana). As a result, many people are turning to CBD products as an alternative treatment for various medical conditions.
Research on CBD & PTSD
One of the conditions that researchers have studied extensively in regard to CBD is PTSD. A 2019 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine concluded that CBD may be effective at reducing symptoms of PTSD, including anxiety and insomnia. The researchers noted that further studies are needed to better understand how exactly the effects of CBD work on those with PTSD.
Other studies have looked into the potential of using cannabis-based medications specifically tailored for PTSD patients. One study conducted by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) found that over 70 percent of veterans participating in their trial reported having fewer symptoms of PTSD following treatment with a Cannabis medicine containing equal amounts of THC and CBD over an eight-week period. These results suggest that there may be therapeutic benefits for those suffering from PTSD when using Cannabis medication tailored specifically for their condition.
Does CBD Help PTSD?
While more research is needed to draw definitive conclusions about the effectiveness of using CBD as a treatment for PTSD, there is evidence suggesting it may be helpful in reducing symptoms such as anxiety and insomnia associated with this mental health condition.
