The New Cannabinoid On the Block
By now, we’re sure you know about THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), the most common cannabinoid found in cannabis. However, you are likely familiar with Delta-9 THC, the cannabinoid with psychoactive properties that can produce a high. Did you know that Delta-9 THC has a sibling? That’s right, Delta-8 THC, a recently rediscovered cannabinoid, is gaining popularity at a rapid rate in the cannabis industry and we can’t wait to tell you about it! So, what exactly is Delta-8 THC?
What Is Delta-8 THC
Delta-8 THC was identified by a team of researchers led by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam in the early 1970’s, but never received much notoriety because the compound occurs at significantly lower levels in cannabis than Delta-9 THC. Delta-8 is an isomer of Delta-9, meaning they have a very similar molecular structure, but the placement of one atomic bond is what separates them. “The researchers discovered that delta-8-THC had almost exactly the same atomic structure as delta-9-THC: The only difference was the placement of one atomic bond in the compound. Of course, this one small difference can mean the compound has different impacts on a user altogether”. Note the difference in the atomic structure in the image below on the upper left hand side of the molecule.
Delta-8 THC shares some of the same therapeutic properties as Delta-9 THC and CBD. Most notably, it is touted for its strong anti-emetic properties (anti-nausea) and anxiolytic properties (anti-anxiety) and recent studies show that Delta-8 THC possesses neuroprotective properties as well. This cannabinoid has the potential to help with sleep, slow abnormal cell growth, and assist with pain. Check out our post What is CBD to learn more about cannabinoid therapy. Consumers of Delta-8 THC can experience all of these amazing benefits without the feeling of paranoia or anxiety that sometimes comes along with consuming Delta-9 THC.
The Legality of Delta-8 THC and Current Products
Delta-8 THC is considered to be a derivative of hemp and therefore can be legally offered in states where hemp is legal. At Happy Trails, all of our Delta-8 THC products are derived from CBD found in hemp. Due to the fact that the percentage of Delta-8 THC is naturally low in the hemp plant, the product must undergo a post-extraction process called fractional distillation, which converts the abundance of CBD found in hemp, into Delta-8 THC.
Currently, the majority of Delta-8 products can be found in vaporizer cartridge form or edibles, both of which we carry in our store. We are just starting to see the emergence of Delta-8 THC tinctures and distillates being infused into hemp flower, and we are excited for what’s to come!
If a possible drug screening is in your future, we advise you to choose a broad spectrum or isolate product.
What Our Friends Are Saying About Delta-8 THC
“In my opinion, Delta-8 THC is all of the best parts of THC without the parts that don’t work for me. In small amounts, it really has a minimally intoxicating, mood elevating effect that allows me to calmly yet intensely focus, without becoming as easily stressed as I usually become. I find that Delta-8 THC creates a clearer, slower and less stressful way of thinking for me that paves the way for creativity and more fluid ways of dialogue and faster recall. I gain an elevated mood, less stressful thought patterns and an overall more fulfilling and joyful day when I use Delta-8 THC.”
For the ladies reading this: “I will be making Delta-8 THC a permanent fixture for regulating pain and discomfort before my monthly cycle. Incorporating Delta-8 THC in conjunction with CBD has completely dialed back my menstrual pains a truly miraculous amount, altered my mindset and minimized my anxiety towards ½ of my month as a woman.”
“I would definitely recommend Delta-8 THC to any and all.”
“I would definitely recommend Delta-8 THC to any and all; those new to cannabinoids, and frequent hemp and marijuana users alike! For those who are nervous to embark down a path of mild intoxication, that’s understandable but I can assure you it’s really worth it to see what it can do for you.” -Hilary
